The MFP market worldwide is growing in leaps and bounds, and the Asia Pacific is no exception, where it grew over 28% in 2006 with total shipments crossing 8.1 million units [excluding Japan]. Of this, laser MFPs contributed to almost 25 percent with a little over 2 million units sold.
Copier based laser MFPs did record good sales even though there was considerable competition from printer based laser MFPs which are eating into the share of the former, particularly in the 1-20ppm segment. Copier based MFPs overshadowed sales of fax-based MFPs by 79% during the same period.
Analysts are predicting that the 1-20ppm printer-based MFPs will continue to see good growth over the next five years, and there will be significant rise in adoption by the small to medium sized companies.
One of the key predictions from IDC is that “31ppm and above printer-based laser MFP shipments will compete with similar offerings from copier vendors by 2010 as printer-based laser MFP vendors are likely to launch better price-performance offerings to better penetrate enterprises.
The e-STUDIO3500c/3510c multifunction products (MFPs) series from Toshiba America Business Solutions (TABS) has been awarded the 2007 "Editor's Choice" award by that Better Buys for Business, a reputed buyer's guide on document imaging equipment (copiers, printers, faxes and scanners) in the United States.
The product series was commended for its "very good color speed, strong paper handling, and excellent image quality... round[ing] out a strong color copier line [that] keeps getting better”. With a list price in the range of $14,999 - $17,449, the product series was also cited for its affordability.
The e-STUDIO3500c offers a speed of 35ppm for black-and-white and color, while e-STUDIO3510c runs at 45ppm for black-and-white and 35ppm for color.
TABS is an independent operating company of Toshiba Corporation, the sixth largest electronics/electrical equipment company.
The C3 Series MFPs from Panasonic is a powerful addition to the office automation equipment space, letting users print, copy, scan, fax and e-mail using one robust device.
The ability to provide high-quality print and copy functions in full color is one of the key features of the device. Using technology such as Background Suppression and Bleedthrough prevention, the devices in the C3 series optimize the original to produce very clear copies even of difficult original documents.
Moreover, the machines have a range of modes available to cater to various types of sources, including map, newspaper and tracing paper, ensuring that quality is not compromised. The C3 series enables color copying of double sided documents on a single sheet of paper without black border (even when the platen cover is open). The devices feature an optional “Finisher” which can be used for various binding, stapling, hole punching, saddle stitching, booklet creation, thereby helping save outsourcing costs.
The printing capability of the C3 series is also cutting edge with an automatic contrast adjustment. With its SD Memory Card printing capability, a user can instantly print pictures from an SD card.
OKI Data Americas is set to launch the A3 CX3641 and A4 CX2032 multifunction products next week. Coinciding with this launch, the company also plans to announce new software capabilities and embedded functionality in the CX3641 MFP, which are expected to optimize the document management systems and workflows in organizations.
The two new color MFPs boast of a high quality output as a result of its proprietary HD Color technology that combining microfine toner and multilevel LED heads. Consequently, these machines can result in significant cost savings. The machines use 7th generation printing technologies such as digital LED and Single Pass Color.
The multi-functional bizhub C550 color document imaging system introduced by Konica Minolta features a network printer, copier and network scanner functionality. Combining a radical design with new technology, this MFP can print or copy in color at 45ppm or in black & white at 55ppm.

The striking design enables the copier to be placed over a power/ network hub outlet in the center of an office without showing any cables; manifesting perfectly the concept of a networked document imaging system being at the heart of the business enterprise.
Beyond aesthetics, the bizhub C550 is designed to help users operate the product easily, with a clear display with LEDs indicating paper levels, job status and job processing. The device comes with an 8-inch full color display with a touch screen that can be rotated and tilted to meet viewing requirements.

The innovative Induction Fusing technology allows for image fusing at lower temperature than conventional fusing, thereby reducing the warm up time to just about 30 seconds.

From a security perspective, the bizhub C550 has an optional biometric finger vein authentication scanner, which allows users to use the system without remembering user names and passwords, while at the same time, making it as secure as possible. The device also comes with features such as sorting, stapling, saddle stitching and 2- & 4-hole punching capabilities.
