Aleratec has introduced a new standalone hard disk drive sanitizer and duplicator all in one unit, HDD Cruiser, which can simultaneously sanitize up to 4 HDDs and duplicate up to 3 HDDs simultaneously. Sanitization capability is very important because of the frequent upgrading of drives these days and therefore, the need for removal of confidential data from old drives.
One of the highlights of the HDD Cruiser is that it is a standalone device and does not require a computer for operation. This means that a computer does not have to be tied up for hours when the device is duplicating or sanitizing a hard disk drive.
The HDD Cruiser has individual, removable, locking, aluminum drive trays. When performing both sanitizing and duplicating, the controller must access the entire capacity of each drive, so the drives must run for extended periods and cooling is of utmost importance. Therefore, the HDD Cruiser has 10 ultra quiet cooling fans while the proprietary aluminum drive trays offer very good thermal conductivity. The locking trays offer important tamper resistance to help prevent interruption of either a duplicating or sanitizing operation.
The HDD Cruiser duplicator and sanitizer has an estimated retail price of about US$1575.

A new school in Devon village, which is likely to be operational by April 2009, will be using interactive whiteboards in the classrooms, reports This Is Exeter (http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/). This is in line with the growing trend amongst schools and educational institutions in the UK to invest in electronic/ IT-enabled teaching aids, particularly interactive whiteboards.
The school management aims to help the school, capable of accommodating about 120 students and being built at a cost of about £3m, deliver â21st century learningâ, which is precisely what technologies like electronic whiteboards enable. Interestingly, according to the report, the school will have feature asked for by the students.
Besides latest educational gadgets like whiteboards, the school is also expected to feature sports facilities, wildlife wetland and outdoor learning facilities.

The Antrim Grammar School from Ulster is making the most of a well-integrated IT program that includes the Internet, particularly with the extensive use of interactive whiteboards, according to a news report in The Belfast Telegraph (http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk)
The article reports that all classrooms in the school are equipped with interactive whiteboards. The teaching staff are also adequately trained in their use, as lack of training and adequate knowledge of the features, benefits and uses of whiteboards have been identified as one of the biggest factors in limiting usage in schools.
Reportedly, the whiteboards are used for various purposes from displaying web pages from the Internet to using flipcharts for programming. The interactive nature of the whiteboards enables students to work on them directly and save their work for future use.

With more and more number of educational institutions opting for interactive whiteboards, there is growing clamour for the establishment of an industry standard, reports the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (http://www.atl.org.uk/).
According to the website, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) has identified that more suppliers are offering their own products leading to compatibility issues. To address this issue, the agency has appointed Becta to establish an industry standard that can benefit all UK educational institutions.
The project is already underway with the first phase due for completion by June 2008.
