WhiteBoards Blog
With more and more number of educational institutions opting for interactive whiteboards, there is growing clamour for the establishment of an industry standard, reports the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (http://www.atl.org.uk/).

According to the website, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) has identified that more suppliers are offering their own products leading to compatibility issues. To address this issue, the agency has appointed Becta to establish an industry standard that can benefit all UK educational institutions.

The project is already underway with the first phase due for completion by June 2008.
The Hitachi Software FX-77 StarBoard interactive whiteboards have just proven the benefits and capabilities of interactive presentation technologies at a school in New Jersey, United States, with greater student participation.

Key features of the Hitachi Software StarBoard FX-77 interactive whiteboards are their durability, versatility and ease-of-use. Being simple to learn and intuitive, both teachers and students can adopt them for a more interactive and participative classroom environment.

Moreover, the whiteboard helps save a lot of time by helping students and teachers to capture whiteboard-written notes made on common applications like MS Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Hitachi Software’s FX Series interactive whiteboards includes the FX-63, FX-77 and FX-82 models (63”, 77” and 82” respectively).

A key differentiating feature of the FX Series is that the board itself does not contain operational electronics, making whiteboards more durable. A field serviceable pod located at the top corner of the board has all the electronics, which can keep the board functional even when unintentional dents, scapes or punctures are caused.
In a recent study entitled “The Evaluation of The Primary School Whiteboard Expansion Project”, BECTA sys that when teachers fully integrate interactive whiteboards and make use of their functionality, students benefit significantly.

The study follows the DfES Primary Schools Whiteboard Expansion project (PSWE) which provided substantial funding to 21 local authorities in 2003-04 to support the acquisition and use of interactive whiteboards in primary schools.

Variables considered in this detailed research included; length of exposure to interactive whiteboard technology, the age of pupils (down to individual birthdays), gender, special needs, entitlement to free schools meals and other socio-economic groupings.

A very important consideration for attaining the benefits of interactive whiteboard technology was the duration that students were exposed to the technology. The study also shows evidence that with better use of interactive technology, performance of less engaged students can also be improved.

The research confirmed that interactive whiteboard technology led to consistent gains across all key stages and subjects. Gains were measured in “months progress” against standard measures of attainment over the two year study period. Moreover, there was no adverse impact at any level, which can enable schools to explore this technology without risk of failure.

To summarize, interactive whiteboards were found have a very positive impacts on the attention, attitude and motivation of all pupils and produces a co-operative, ‘community of learning’ ethos in the class. Moreover, interactive whiteboards helped with teaching abstract and difficult concepts and complex ideas.
Worthington Direct, a supplier of school furniture, is offering whiteboards manufactured by Best-Ritea that have pre-printed lines and lettering. The Pale-Riterä whiteboards, offered by the company, include a grid pattern embedded in the board surface that is visible to the user, but remains nearly invisible to an audience.

These whiteboards are available with porcelain steel surface that has a magnetic steel surface laminated to a thick MDF substrate for extra strength and moisture resistance. The advantage of having a magnetic surface is that it allows teachers to use additional teaching aids that can be ‘stuck’ on to the whiteboard using small magnets. Moreover, the porcelain steel surface provides greater eras ability. With a lower surface light distortion, visibility is enhanced and users face less eye strain and discomfort.

Worthington Direct offers a range of Best-Riteâ products including deluxe porcelain steel marker boards, porcelain steel magnetic chalkboards, vinyl tack boards, reversible freestanding boards and easel on wheels.
