Lexmark International has introduced the Lexmark X658 monochrome laser multifunction product (MFP). The new product is smaller in size, but robust in design and prints at great speed. Moreover, the compact MFP saves considerable space in the office.

This new MFP is an extended part of the Lexmark X650 Series of monochrome laser MFPs and is targeted at the high-growth A4 paper size market.

The sale of A4 MFPs is growing faster than those devices targeted at A3 tabloid-size, owing to underlying qualities like cost, space and time saving ability. In fact, use of an A4 device can help save customers up to 25 % in the total ownership costs for the machine which really depends on monthly page volume.

The X658 also occupies lesser space than a typical A3 device and its space-saving design also enables the users with  time-saving finishing options and workflow solutions. Moreover, the device can give 55 prints, photoccopies or scans per minute with some models having the StapleSmart II to staple multiple sets of documents also. The MFP also features a large 80 GB hard drive capacity and input capacity for 2300 sheets.

If you are on the hunt for a colour laser printer, then there is probably no better time than now. As Susan Silvius writes in her article in PC World, this is certainly a buyer's market for printers considering the range of printers available at affordable prices. Obviously, laser printers in the sub-$500 range are bound to have their limitations, but on the other side of the coin, printers that are priced at over $1000 offer an amazing feature set.

As to the key things to look for when buying a colour laser printer, Susan has provided quite a few useful tips in her article.  Here are some of the key points she advises printer buyers to look out for:

i. Printer engine speed, measured in pages per minute (ppm):  The faster the printer speed the better it is, at least from a productivity standpoint. However, it is important to remember that seldom do printers give more than 75% of the claimed PPM in real work-situations.

ii. Maximum duty cycle- this is the typical volume of pages that a printer can print per month, and is generally proportional to the price of the printer. Estimate your monthly printing requirements well to buy a printer with the right duty cycle.

iii.  Resolution -- Susan suggests that a resolution of 600-by-600 dpi should be more than good enough for most business needs.

iv. Cost of operation-- closely factor in the total cost of operation of the printer including the cost of consumables. This can be a significant cost item.

v. Paper capacity- see how much paper can be loaded on to the printer and what size/ type of paper. The more the capacity of the paper tray, lesser the time one has to spend in loading paper.

With so much emphasis on the environment friendliness of every product, it seems that soy based ink cartridges are making their entry to make printers more environment-friendly, if this news report on Recycle.co.uk is to be believed.

According to the report, a US-based company, Print Recovery Concepts is all set to introduce these soy based ink cartridges, which is expected to reduce the amount of petroleum-based products. Equally importantly, not using the standard petroleum based ink doesn't make these cartridges any inferior in quality or more expensive in price.

Another important advantage that the soy ink cartridges are supposed to have is supposedly the ease of de-inking them while recycling.

Printer buyers in the UK- don't be surprised if you find a "high protein" ink cartridge in printer specifications very soon!
Computer and computer peripherals maker Dell has announced the launch of three new models of colour laser printers along with enhancements to its printer services that will include ProSupport, installation and recycling options. In fact, the company has plans to introduce feature improvements for its monochrome laser printers later this year. The three new products introduced now are the Dell 2135cn multifunction colour laser printer; the Dell 2130cn and the Dell 3130cn.

The Dell 2135cn MFP is targeted mainly at small office/home office segment with low/medium volume usage. The printer offers speeds of up to 12 pages per minute (ppm) in colour and 16 ppm, while printing in black and white. In addition the printer offers photocopying, scanning and faxing features.

The Dell 2130cn colour laser printer offers higher printing speeds of 16ppm in colour and upto 20ppm in monochrome. The printer is available with optional accessories like a duplexer, 250-sheet paper drawer, network protocol adapter and wireless printer adapter.

On the other hand, the Dell 3130cn colour laser printer is suitable not only small to medium sized businesses but also larger workgroups. The device offers higher speeds of upto 26ppm in colour and 31ppm in monochrome with up to 70,000 pages of maximum monthly duty cycle.

Dell also offers high yield toner cartridges with all of these printers, which the company claims will significantly reduce the total cost of ownership of these machines. Moreover, all of these printers boast of excellent energy efficiency and power management characteristics, including certification with ENERGY STAR, Imaging Version 1.0.
Samsung has introduced three new colour laser printers- the CLX-3175FN, the CLP-315 and the CLP-315W- targeted at the small office home office (SOHO) segment and small workgroups. While the CLX-3175FN is priced around $400, the other two laser printers are priced in the $200 - $250 range.

Besides their speed and noise-free operation owing to Samsung’s NO NOIS™ print engine, elegant design and compact size, the CLX 3175FN laser printers are network-ready, while the CLP-315W offers wireless connectivity capability. Each of the three printers offers a maximum resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi, with each unit delivers the first (mono) print out in 14 seconds.

A comparison between the features & specifications of the latest additions to Samsung's colour laser printer line is given in this image (excerpted from a media release from the company):
