The traditional office culture is under threat in the UK as the country becomes increasingly wireless, according to a report by the Centre for Future Studies as reported by recruitment firm Witan Jardine.
Increasingly, there is much lesser importance on a physical office as a result of the growth in wireless networks and advances in mobile and broadband technology. In fact, the thinking now is that if an individual has a computer with a high-speed Internet connection and a mobile phone, the physical location of the employee is immaterial.
The study reportedly points out that almost two-thirds of the small to medium sized enterprises in the UK are already offering flexi-time and operating from a virtual office facilities. At the same time, there is the challenge of ensuring adequate IT skills to take advantage of the virtual office capabilities.
