The MFP market worldwide is growing in leaps and bounds, and the Asia Pacific is no exception, where it grew over 28% in 2006 with total shipments crossing 8.1 million units [excluding Japan]. Of this, laser MFPs contributed to almost 25 percent with a little over 2 million units sold.
Copier based laser MFPs did record good sales even though there was considerable competition from printer based laser MFPs which are eating into the share of the former, particularly in the 1-20ppm segment. Copier based MFPs overshadowed sales of fax-based MFPs by 79% during the same period.
Analysts are predicting that the 1-20ppm printer-based MFPs will continue to see good growth over the next five years, and there will be significant rise in adoption by the small to medium sized companies.
One of the key predictions from IDC is that â31ppm and above printer-based laser MFP shipments will compete with similar offerings from copier vendors by 2010 as printer-based laser MFP vendors are likely to launch better price-performance offerings to better penetrate enterprises.
