Wide format printers and plotters typically come with a wide price range depending on the size and resolution offered by the machine. Larger the size of the machine or sharper the resolution, higher is the price. While low-end wide format printer or 24-inch inkjet printers cost about: GBP1500 -GBP3000, a LED and inkjet plotter with high-end features may cost in the range of GBP4000-GBP7500. At the really high end of the spectrum, there are high-end color inkjet printers that come with a price tag of about GBP12600.
High-volume printing jobs require expensive machines that operate in a “production-like facilities. Such printers may cost between GBP25000 to GBP125000 and more. Such machines are mostly used by large CAD shops and specialized proofing and print shops.
Additional features such as copying or scanning can potentially double the cost of the printer. It is therefore advisable to spend on such features only if you intend to or expect to use these features extensively.
Sometimes it might be better to consider buying a used machine that has depreciated in value. Many dealers provide the option to buy second-hand machines, which can bring down your cost-per-output significantly. Of course, besides assessing second-hand machines using some of the same criteria that you would to evaluate a brand new machine (resolution, speed, size, warranty and service options), also evaluate the age of the printer/ plotter, the approximate volume of prints that have already been made (if available) and the history of maintenance / repair that the machine has gone through.
Taking into account maintenance and operational costs, it might make sense to opt for a reliable LED printer compared to buying an inkjet printer, because inkjet printers have a relatively shorter operational life. Moreover, inkjet technology also seems to evolve at a much faster clip.
While evaluating the cost of a machine, make sure that you make realistic assessment of the costs such as: ink, toners, paper etc. In this regard, LED printers provide a cost advantage because of the amount of ink-refills an inkjet printer requires.
